The highly anticipated iOS 4.3 is expected to be released by Apple this week. It may be a great idea if we will go through the new features of the iOS 4.3 and thread the changes made on the iOS 4.3 beta 1, beta 2 and beta 3 that Apple has seeded to developers of iOS developer program so you know what to expect. Here is the list of the features of the new iOS 4.3.

Personal Hotspot (for iPhone only) – This feature allows users to share their iPhone’s 3G data connection with up to 5 mobile devices. The feature can be enabled through the Settings app. iOS 4.3 will bring the Personal Hotspot feature to GSM iPhone users. It is already available to Verizon iPhone users.

AirPlay – AirPlay was first introduced on iOS 4.2, which allowed users to stream digital media wirelessly from their iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch to Apple TV 2G or any AirPlay-enabled features. However, AirPlay feature was only limited to pre-installed apps like YouTube and iPod/Video app. However, the AirPlay in the iOS 4.3 allows users to stream media wirelessly from third-party apps such as Safari mobile browser and also the pre-installed Photo app, thus unlocking the full potential of the feature.

Side Switch Toggle (iPad only) - In iOS 4.2, Apple had changed the rotation lock to mute switch like the iPhone. However, in iOS 4.3, iPad users may choose to select the side switch at the top right corner either as a rotation lock switch or mute button.

New Font for Notes – In iOS 4.2, Apple gave its users two new fonts: Helvitica and Chalkboard instead of only Marker Felt. In iOS 4.3, Apple replaced the Chalkboard font with the Noteworthy font.

Cancel/Delete App Installations Mid-way – The iOS 4.3 allows users to cancel and delete downloading while you are at the middle of it.

Customize Alerts for Messages (iPhone only) – iPhone users now have the option to set the number of times that they want to be alerted for an unread SMS/MMS. The user may play it once, twice up to 10 times.

Redesigned App Store Updates Page – The App Store get a new look in the iOS 4.3, making it easier to install updates of the apps that you have already purchased.

Push Notification for Ping – Users can set up push notifications for Ping.

New Wait Button - Apple has added a wait button to the Add contact extended keyboard and has moved some of the buttons around. Tapping on the Wait button will add a semicolon to the number as opposed to pause which adds a comma. The pause button has moved to where the ghosted 4 button used to be, the plus button has moved to where pause was, star has moved to where plus was and a new wait button has been added to where the ghosted 6 button used to be.

Parental Controls – New parental controls for Ping – Apple’s social network for music.

Location Services Settings - Location Services settings in the Settings app has been moved to the top-level instead of under General to make it more easily accessible.

Compatibility - iOS 4.3 is compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation and iPad. Unfortunately, iOS 4.3 will not available for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2nd generation, which means that iOS 4.2.1 is the last iOS software update for these devices.

People from the Technical University of Serres developed an application called AirMediaPlayer, which is initially a project that allows users to stream different media content on their iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Windows PC. However, Erica Sadun from TUAW has already developed a similar application called AirPlayer that allows users to stream media content on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac.

The latest version of iOS is iOS 4.2.1 enables users to stream and watch videos as well as other digital media content from any iDevice to a television. This is probably one of the coolest features of the new iOS; however, the AirPlay functionality was limited to users with Apple TV. This means that unless you own an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch and an Apple TV 2G, you will not be able to enjoy the service.

The AirPlayer for Mac and AirMediaPlayer for Windows removed such restriction and allows to stream media content to their Mac or Windows computer. With AirPlayer and AirMediaPlayer, you no longer have to jailbreak your iDevice.

In order for you to stream media content to your Windows computer, you need to follow and remember these things:

  • It only works on Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.
  • You have to download and install #
  • .NET framework runtimes and associated files (.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or later) for AirMediaPlayer to work. You can download it from Microsoft’s website.
  • Bonjour for Windows (note it comes bundled with iTunes, so you don’t need it if iTunes is already installed else you can download Bonjour Print Services for Windows).
  • iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1.
  • Download AirMediaPlayer (the developers seem to have pulled the link to the download, we have found this link or this one but please proceed with caution and at your own risk).

Once everything is installed, you will be able to stream different digital media content from any of your iDevice to your Windows PC.
