The earlier release of sn0wbreeze version 1.3 was botched by some minor bugs present in the software. After careful consideration and adjustments, iH8sn0w had fixed the bugs and finally releases a new working version to jailbreak and unlock iPhone OS 3.1.3, the Sn0wbreeze 1.4. This new software would allow any iPhone OS 3.1.2 or lower to upgrade to the new OS. The dev team describes the software as follows:

sn0wbreeze is a tool for Windows that will jailbreak your iPods and iPhones, setup custom boot logos, activate your iPhone, root partition size, build custom IPSW, and more!

Keep in mind though that 3.1.3 is simply a minor firmware version. You don’t necessarily need this upgrade for your iPhones. However many would still want to upgrade so it is important to keep this reminders in check before doing so.

Before proceeding with the upgrade, check carefully first than you have an iPhone or iPod touch running OS 3.1.2 or lower, which has been previously jailbroken or pwned. This is very important for Sn0wbreeze won’t work if you already have the new OS 3.1.3. This is only suitable for those with a jailbroken iPhone running a lower and older version of the OS.

Aside from the software compatibility, Sn0wbreeze doesn’t also work on all device types and models. Here is the list of devices that can be jailbroken:

  • iPhone 3GS (OLD BOOTROM ONLY. If the 4th/5th digits of the serial # are before 40 then you should have the old bootrom. If your current jailbreak is tethered DO NOT try this.)
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 2G
  • iPod Touch 2G (OLD BOOTROM ONLY. If your current jailbreak is tethered you have the new bootrom so stay away and/or If your model # starts with MC you have the new bootrom so stay away!)
  • iPod Touch 1G

And here is the list of devices it can unlock:

  • All iPhone 2G
  • iPhones with 04.26.08 Baseband
  • iPhones with 05.11.07 Baseband

To find your baseband, go to the Settings app of your phone. Choose General, then about, and lastly modem firmware.

Download the latest version of Sn0wbreeze straight from iH8sn0w’s website.

A general reminder to all: Hacking your iPhone could void its warranty for good. So please keep in mind to be careful of your actions and do them at your own risk. Your best companion in this process is backing up your iPhone for safety.

The latest release from Apple, the newest version of their iPhone OS 3.1.3 has attracted many consumers to convert. However this version had been plagued by some minor bug fixes and improvements before fully being released out to everyone.

In any case you still haven’t jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone but you have plans of doing so, it is important that you read this post first before jumping in head-on.

The Dev Team of iPhone releases this warning statement to users who have already jailbroken and unlocked their iPhones:

WARNING! At 10.30AM PST on February 2nd 2010 Apple released the 3.1.3 version (7E18) of the iPhoneOS.

If you care about your jailbreak and unlock, don’t update your device - 3G and 3G(S) owners should pay particular attention to this warning.

  • PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.3
  • There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).

Apparently, iPhone OS 3.1.3 also updates the baseband firmware from 05.11.07 to 05.12.01. This simply means that if you’ve updated your jailbroken and unlocked iPhone by accident, you might not only lose the jailbreak but you could even end up with a locked iPhone. When this happens, you’d have to wait for someone to unlock the baseband included in OS 3.1.3 or search for someone who can downgrade the baseband for you which is highly unlikely at present.

There had been recent updates released by the Dev Team. Read on to find out more:

Update 1: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] Thanks to daring experimenters in the comments, we can confirm that yesterday’s redsn0w works for today’s 3.1.3 update for iPhone 2G. Just point it at the 3.1.2 iPhone 2G IPSW after doing update or restore to 3.1.3. So far we’ve only confirmed this for iPhone 2G. (Note that if this does work for iPhone 3G too, you can *only* use it if you don’t care about the unlock.)

Update 2: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] Can confirm that this method works for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 1G too. Don’t do it for iPhone 3G if you need an unlock though (really, don’t!). For older iPod touch 2G, we’ll need a small (1-character) change in redsn0w source.

Update 3: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] For those with older (non-MC) iPod touch 2G, we’ve compiled a special version of redsn0w meant just for you: Mac and Windows. You guys can get in on the “3.1.2 loophole” too using this special version. Don’t try this if you have a newer iPod Touch 2G or if you’re not completely sure what version you have. And of course don’t try it for 3GS or ipt3G either.

Keep in mind if you’re an ultrasn0w, yellowsn0w, or blacksn0w user, don’t go anywhere near it. Meanwhile other users of iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G (not unlockers), iPod 1G, and iPod 2G older version can go ahead and give the new software a shot. For everyone else not mentioned, it is best to wait for official support in the tools for safety.
