The iPhone Dev Team releases their very own cross-platform jailbreaking, unlocking and customizing tool for iPhones and iPod touches, redsn0w in beta version. This software is applicable and works well for both Mac OSX (x86) and Windows users alike to enjoy.

Like all other software previously released, there are specific models and devices that are only supported by the beta version. Redsn0w supports the following:

  • All iPhones and iPod touches except the iPod touch 3G
  • iPhone OS 3.0 and iPhone OS 3.1.2

The Dev Team admits that their redsn0w doesn’t match up with the speed of its highest competitor blackra1n. However their program boasts far more variations. In the future, once redsn0w is out of beta, the team plans to support a greater number of models and devices such as iPod touch 3G, PPC OSX, and Linux.

Here are some of the reasons cited by the Dev Team that differentiates redsn0w from Geohot’s popular jailbreaking and unlocking tool blackra1n:

  • It uses our original Pwnage bootrom exploit for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. (Because it’s a bootrom exploit, it can’t be fixed by Apple without a new hardware release.) Note that redsn0w 0.9 does use the USB exploit for iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, but that exploit will be fixed in Apple’s next FW release.
  • It offers custom logos and verbose boot.
  • It installs Cydia without needing a separate download
  • It’s not as fast (but redsn0w handles more variations)

To those possessing the latest iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 2G model with a serial number beginning with MC, or any iPod Touch 3G with the latest boot ROM, the Dev Team has specific instructions for you. Read on to find out more before accessing the latest software update:

You can use redsn0w to jailbreak but you are currently restricted to “tethered” rebooting. That means you need to connect your device to a computer to complete the boot after a reset. Also, these devices cannot have custom logos.

redsn0w will ask you whether or not you fit in this category when used with the iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 2G. If you have a late-model device and don’t give redsn0w the correct answer, you will likely need to do a system restore to recover from the mistake.

To do a tethered boot after your late-model device resets for some reason, either run redsn0w again and select “Just boot tethered right now”, or run blackra1n.

A general reminder to all: Hacking your iPhone could void its warranty for good. So please keep in mind to be careful of your actions and do them at your own risk. Your best companion in this process is backing up your iPhone for safety.

Mac users, jailbreak and unlock your iPhone easily with this simple tutorial using Geohot’s popular blackra1n software. Before you can begin, keep in mind that this guide does not work for all types of devices.

Please ensure first that you have the iPhone OS 3.1.2 installed as well as a 05.11.07 baseband. If you have the 5.12.01 baseband or higher though, unfortunately you cannot jailbreak yet. Meanwhile if your baseband is lower than the prescribed 05.11.07, you must first restore to the 3.1.2 firmware in order to proceed. Do this by starting up iTunes, selecting your iPhone from the device list, then holding down the option key and selecting restore. After this minor change, you can now push through with the tutorial.

Keep in mind, blackra1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. This simply means once you have successfully jailbroken your device, do NOT ever let your battery die. Anticipate it and charge immediately once you notice it signalling it’s on low. When you allow your device to die, you would still need to reconnect it to the computer and specifically use blackra1n simply to reboot it.

If you have answered yes to the requirements above, then you’re good to go. But a word of caution to all: hacking your iPhone could void it of its warranty for good. So please proceed at your own risk. It is necessary to for safety and security purposes to backup your iPhone before beginning with the process. Once you’re done, we’re ready to begin.

Easy Guide to Jailbreak:

  1. Visit the blackra1n website, http://www.blackra1n.com, using any web browser of your choice on your Mac. Then select the apple logo located at the bottom of the screen.
  2. When a prompt appears, download and save the blackra1n zip file to your device. Then double click the downloaded zip file and extract the executable blackra1n.dmg. Double click the extracted file to launch the program.
  3. From here on, your iPhone or Ipod needs to be connected to the Mac. Once connected, proceed to run the blackra1n.exe file.
  4. You are now officially ready to start the jailbreak process. Proceed by selecting the “Make it ra1n” button.
  5. After this, you would notice that your iPhone is now in recovery mode. Instead of the recovery mode screen, the display features a picture of Geohot. Then you’re iPhone would reboot.

Jailbreaking has now been completed. You will notice a popup message informing you that blackra1n is free software and you can donate to Geohot at [email protected] if you appreciate the software. Select ok to finish the process.

At this point, you’d see the blackra1n icon on the springboard of your iPhone. You can proceed further to unlock your device thereafter following these simple steps:

  1. Ensure you have an internet connection first. Then launch the application by selecting the blackra1n icon.
  2. Choose the installer application of your choice then select snow if you wish to unlock your device. Press install located at the top right of the screen if you want to proceed.
  3. Blackra1n will now begin to download and install the packages you selected.
  4. When completed, you would see a post install log for sn0w. CommCenter would automatically be restarted. But if your carrier does not support 3G, simply disable it. Then select the close button to continue.
  5. Blackra1n would now respring your iPhone. Now you can find the installer package right at your springboard.
  6. Once the package is confirmed to be working properly, you can now choose to uninstall blackra1n by selecting the “uninstall blackra1n” button inside the application. By doing this, you are opting to remove blackra1n from your springboard.

Congratulations! You have successfully jailbreak and unlocked your iPhone easily by yourself.
