A new jailbreak tweak gives user more protection and control over his or her contacts when an iPhone app try to access the contacts database and allows the user to allow or deny the access.
Jailbreak developer Ryan Petrich released a jailbreak tweak called ContactPrivacy. This new jailbreak tweak will enable the user to add more protection in his or her contacts database.
However, ContactPRivacy initially caused WhatsApp to crash. Thus, Ryan released an updated version of the jailbreak tweak that fixes the crash issue of Whatsapp. Moreover, it enables the user to enable or disable the access of contacts via the Settings app.
The tweak was developed inspired by the Path’s privacy incident. The incident caused a turmoil when Singapore-based developer and blogger Arun Thampi has discovered that Path’s slick iPhone app uploads your entire address book to its servers while he was trying to hack it to implement a Path Mac OS X app.
Apple once expressed that apps that use address book data will have to explicit take permission from users with a future iOS software update. Until such thing is happening, you can protect your address book through ContactPrivacy.
ContactPrivacy can be installed for free. Users just need to add Ryan’s Petrich repo to Cydia. The latest version of ContactPrivacy is 1.1. If you see 1.0 as the latest version available in Cydia, kill Cydia and launch it again and wait for the packages to load.
