AcerCloud: An iCloud Imitation?

Tech company Acer unveiled their new storage service called AcerCloud, which is quite similar to Apple’s new storage service, iCloud.
iCloud was launched by the Cupertino-based company Apple last October to provide bigger storage service and connects all of the personal devices of Apple users. The AcerCloud uses Always Connect technology that allows users to share and retrieve multimedia and data files anytime and anywhere.
Acer announced that the AcerCloud will be bundled with all Acer computers in the US, UK, Asia and China starting the second quarter of 2012. However, is this a copycat of Apple’s newest service? There is an undeniable resemblance between the services. Here are some of the specific features of the new service:
Connects all Acer devices – AcerCloud makes it easier to transfer files from one device to another. For example, you can easily take a photo from your smartphone and store it and view them on your PC at home or in the office without the need to manually transfer the files. Acer Always Connect technology can wake it up through Wi-Fi® so media can be retrieved via a mobile device. AcerCloud, meanwhile, intelligently uses local and cloud storage together so all data is always available.
PicStream –This may sound like Apple’s PhotoStream. You can simply take photos on your smartphone and backed it up on the main PC. Then you can share them through clear.fi in the Cloud with other devices. The photos are backed up permanently on the PC and will be temporarily available for 30 days in the personal iCloud and other mart devices.
AcerCloud Docs- This feature will highly benefit professionals who worked on various important documents needed for their work. They can save the documents on their PC and be temporarily available on their personal AcerCloud and stream it through other devices. If a sudden meeting or presentation came up, one must not need to worry as he can gain access to all the files. These files are all temporarily available in 30 days.
Clear.fi Media – This Acer’s unique application, users can access all their multimedia at any time. One can use the clear.fi media to gain access to one’s personal cloud and conduct live stream or download the content watch it offline.
Acer’s president Jim Wong said that, “AcerCloud not only provides the simplicity and efficiency when accessing and sharing data, but it’s also free with a new Acer PC and gives our users peace-of-mind, knowing that their data is safely transferred in a personal cloud space.”
This sure reminds us of Apple’s iCloud. Will this start another lawsuit for copyright infringement or did Apple just paved the way for a new storing and sharing method? Currently, the new AcerCloud will support Android devices starting on the second quarter of 2012. There is a plan that Windows-based devices will be supported in the near future.
